Can You Get Free Internet on the Sciphone (The CECT i68)?

By Rae Edwards

The other day, someone emailed me and asked if it was possible to get free Internet or web use for free on the CECT i68 (SciPhone).  This person stated "I have heard that if you install opera mini via Java than you can get online for free."  I'll tell you my response in the following article.

Opera Mini Is A Free Web Browser, But The Internet Isn't Necessarily Included: It doesn't cost you anything to download opera mini onto the SciPhone. This phone supports Java so all you have to do is go to the get jar or opera mini websites and download the browser onto the phone.  It is a great browser because it shrinks the information down so that the whole page fits on the phone.  You're using less KB of data, so this does save some money.  But, in order for the browser to work, you must have a data or web plan from your network.  Whether this is free or not depends upon the deal that you have with your carrier. Some will include this as part of a package.

Getting Data And Setting Up The Internet:  Even if you have a pre paid or pay as you go sim, you can almost always add data or web use onto it for not too much money. For example, GoPhone offers 1MB of data for only $4.99.  You basically have to call 611 and add this, buy a MB card at any store, or log on to the company's website and follow the directions for media net.  You can also find prepaid sim cards that sometimes include unlimited data and sometimes even unlimited minutes and text.  This cards are around $25.  No, $4.99 or $25 isn't free, but it isn't a lot of money either.

Once you've obtained web use onto your sim, you should be good to go if your data and web settings are already pointed to the carrier that you are using.  If they are not, you can either get these from your carrier or you can find many folks who can provide these.  There is even software that will place this on your phone without you needing to do all that much, and these often run for under $2 -$5.  (If you are using opera mini, you'll also need to reset the java settings to correspond with your carrier.)

The bottom line is that although getting on the web isn't necessarily free, it can be had for very low cost.  And it's shame not to take advantage of getting online on the SciPhone because the very large flat screen often allows you to see the whole page of a site that you'd maybe see only half of if you were using another phone.  And the finger touch interface makes moving around / scrolling along the page very easy and intuitive.  I like that you don't have to have a contract with this phone because this allows you to only add web usage when you need it and to only buy as much as you need which keeps your overall cost down and predictable.

New iPod Video - And All Its Great Advantages and Benefits

By Ernesto Maitim

The new iPod video has a number of great advantages and benefits. First of all is the quality of the images, which is very clear and detailed. Even the text images are also very vivid. However, the real use of the new device for some critic can be confusing. However, many say that while you find that there is a degree of convenience and enjoyment of watching shows and video on the new iPod video, the device is actually really meant for listening. For how else can you watch a show while on a physical activity such as brisk walking or running?

Critics also state that people love to watch move on the wide screen. The idea of the new iPod video definitely offers limits in watching movies and TV shows. Another disadvantage of the new iPod model is that it turns off after 2 playing hours, which is almost a bane to those who love watching lengthy movies. However, the iPod is certainly the best way to while away the time while traveling or waiting in line.

On the bright side, the new iPod video is certainly not only about watching videos or shows. Albeit the battery works for short 2 hours when watching a show, the battery life is actually 20 long hours which used for music listening, compared to the 16 hours for the last iPod model.

The new iPod video likewise boast of the biggest color screen, and such can be utilized for easy viewing of photos, aside of course from video and show watching. There is also a marked increase in the clearness of the text. Likewise, new iPod video offers full sized photo thumbnails.

The latest iPod video model shows that the constant evolution of this product means that the Apple company is giving its best to provide satisfaction to the needs of the consumers. This being said, expect more changes and improvements on this iPod model, especially on the areas of accessories and video settings.

More and more businesses are becoming aware of their carbon footprint and negative impact on the environment and they are taking steps to counteract or balance their carbon emissions. One of the most recent way to help combat this is to switch to green or eco friendly promotional items!

Every business at some point will use promotional items to promote their company, service or brand and with the introduction of eco friendly promotional items it is now possible to do this and reduce their carbon footprint. Eco friendly promotional items are made from recycled materials or materials that do not have a negative impact on the environment. Instead of using newly manufactured materials they opt for a recycled version. The eco products have exactly the same promotional impact with their clients but with the added benefit of promoting a green and ethical business message. Everyone likes to be seen to be green and to be playing their part in the fight against global warming.

One of the most popular items to come out of the Far East in recent times is the eco usb. These portable storage devices allow users to drag and drop documents from their computer onto the memory of the flash drive and take it with them wherever they go i.e home or on business trips. The eco usb products feature a shell made from recycled plastic or in some cases bamboo. Bamboo is a very popular option and the bamboo is often sourced from sustainable sources. In fact bamboo is one of the fastest growing woody plants on the planet and some species can grown up to 1 metre per day!

The eco usb flash drives like all promotional products can be custom printed with your company logo and are a great way of promoting a green message. They are often used to hand out at events or exhibitions and the internal memory can also be uploaded with a company logo or presentation. If your company has considered purchasing flash drives in recent times then take a look at the range of eco usb products as an alternative. They work in exactly the same way but you can be sure that you will be playing your part in keeping the planet green!

Matthew Money is the online editor for USBflash which is a leading UK supplier of eco usb products and a range of promotional usb flash drives.

The New 15-Inch Macbook Pro - Two Month Impression

I've owned my own unibody Macbook Pro for about two months now, and it's time to sit back and look at it objectively, now that the hormones have subsided a little. Here are some thoughts...

I've come to realize that in terms of actual hardware capability, this new Macbook Pro isn't much different from the old one, with the exception of the 9600M GT for games. Since I have three consoles to play games on, the only game I tried was Microsoft's Flight Simulator X. Being an avid flight sim geek, I knew that FSX is extremely CPU-bound, and that it prefers Nvidia cards over ATi, sorry, AMD ones. From benchmarks at Tom's Hardware, I also knew that the 9600 GT (desktop version) was one of the best-performing graphics cards (for FSX), so you could say my curiosity was piqued. As it turned out, FSX ran like a fat kid in phys. ed. class due to the relatively slow CPU, so I suppose gaming won't be happening for me on this laptop. That doesn't mean the CPU is slow, that's just the case for FSX (it can struggle to display 30 fps on an overclocked Core i7). A 2.4 GHz Penryn is pretty decent for a laptop.

I also pondered upon the value of this Macbook Pro. I've defended my Apple computers to naysayers by pointing out the build quality, tactile feel and virtues of the OS X operating system, but after the heartbreak that was FSX, I was questioning my decision to drop two large on this laptop. After all, I could have gotten an amazing Windows laptop that had a faster CPU, more RAM, a Blu-Ray drive, more HDD space, better graphics and a better screen for the same or less moolah. After giving it some thought, I realized that, as a writer, I needed a reliable computer, one that wouldn't be affected by viruses and other issues. Having struggled through university with a constantly vulnerable PC, I've become quite complacent now that I'm using Macs. I can download freely from Limewire, for example, knowing well that most files are viruses. All they do is not open, so I can just delete them and move on. I never need to format and reinstall, so my files are always safe; no more family photographs lost. This comfort comes at a cost, that is the premium associated with Apple computers.

I have dabbled in running OS X on PCs quite a bit, and while that was a good interim solution and an introduction to OS X, it's not how I would choose to run my computer, wondering if the next update will break my install. All things considered, I've come to terms paying the premium for the OS X operating system... it is worth it. You simply can't believe how much of a relief it is to be able to just use the computer without having to worry about malware, viruses, broken installs and other issues.

The complaints I have aren't all that great in number, but are niggles nonetheless. The battery was reduced in capacity... as an Indian associate of mine says, "senses not making." With the LED display, low-powered graphics card and 45 nm CPU, instead of getting the same battery life as the old model, this one could have had 20% better life. There are laptops out there that get 6+ hours on a single charge, but none of Apple's laptops come even close. The hinge, while having a delectably smooth operation, is not strong enough. I've seen complaints on Apple's forums where they think this is blasphemy and that Apple should compensate for their losses. While the problem isn't that big (they think you should be able to tilt the laptop 90 degrees so that the keyboard is like a wall, and not have the display tilt at all), it certainly deserves some attention. Heat, that eternal issue plaguing Apple laptops hasn't loosened its grip even slightly, and the MBP does get pretty hot, pretty fast. If only the underdeveloped world could afford Macbooks, birth rates could be controlled (it's a conspiracy, cue X-Files theme). The eject button for the DVD drive is software-based, not hardware. It wouldn't have killed anyone at Apple (I think) to have it hardwired as well. It would make using Windows less complicated (as having software do something as vanilla as eject a DVD can have unpredictable results in the world of Bill), and while we're on the subject, trackpad usage in Windows needs help. It doesn't register all the fancy new moves all the time, which to say the least, makes you very, very frustrated. Even when in OS X, the trackpad's detection needs a bit of help. An update was released a couple of days ago, but I don't notice anything different. I was also expecting a bit of a boost with the DDR3, but in real-world usage and benchmarks, there is no difference. While we're on the subject, a $2000 laptop should definitely have 4 GB of RAM, especially with an Apple laptop where people are bound to be running Parallels, VMware or any of the other professional apps that Macbook Pro users love. I will be upgrading to 4 GB very soon, the slow speeds of Parallels just has me down in the dumps.

I haven't outgrown the looks of this beautiful laptop, even if I've grown out of the gaga stage the beginning. I'm a sucker for anything well-built, and I notice minute differences in things, such as the solidity of the Japan-made PSP versus the relatively cheap feel of the Chinese-made one. One of the best things about the new MBP is how solid it is. This unibody thing Apple touts is more than a gimmick or simple selling point, it actually makes a big difference in a product that is portable. Unlike a desktop computer where your interaction is limited to the mouse and keyboard, you'll immediately notice the build quality of a laptop that you open, close and adjust frequently. And since the keyboard and trackpad are integrated into the computer, you'll notice if it creaks or feels cheap, but thankfully, this laptop does none of that. The older Macbook Pros had a bit of a design flaw in that over time, the area to the right of the trackpad, where you'd normally place your right palm, would deform under the weight of your hand and change the shape of the DVD drive opening. In some cases, getting DVDs in and out would not be possible after this happened. It looks like Apple has learned from this, and I can find zero issues of this type. In fact, I was very impressed with the quality of machining... all the cuts and openings are positively jewel-like and the overall finish looks speckled, for lack of a better term. Aluminum is just a wonderful material to work with, it's light, attractive, strong (when anodized) and won't wear like plastic. The trackpad is now glass, but you wouldn't know it if someone didn't tell you, and even then, you might not believe them. At first, I was skeptical, but I appreciate the fact that it is no longer plastic, and I'll tell you why. Any Macbook's trackpad, be it black, white or aluminum, would show wear within just a few months. What happens is that the oil from your skin along with the grooves that make up your fingerprints sand the area that you normally use. In the beginning you can only see it from an angle, but as time goes on, it becomes increasingly noticeable. I've noticed nothing of the sort with this new glass trackpad, so that by itself will add to the longevity, as least aesthetically. Finally, the writer's instrument, the keyboard. It is the best keyboard I've seen on a laptop, along with the Macbook Air's. I was a disbeliever in laptop keyboards until I tried these! They have short, positive travel, and allow me to deliver my fastest typing speeds. Months of hard, fast typing hasn't changed them at all (not on the Macbook Pro, nor my aluminum keyboard for the iMac). These are a vast improvement over the previous mushy, Cadbury Dairy Milk-looking keys on the last Macbook Pro. Did I mention I love the backlighting? I like it so much I can't see myself ever buying a laptop without this feature.

I'm glad to see that the laptop is holding up well, and true to my experience with OS X, has given me no issues at all so far. I can just use the laptop for whatever I want without worry, which is why I got it in the first place. I think that Macbooks and Macbook Pros are great for anyone that values reliability over gaming, the only area where Windows laptops have an advantage. The only thing is, you'd have to cough up a little extra cash to get them, but at least you know they'll run OS X well for a few years to come, as even the oldest Intel Macs can run the latest version of OS X well. And if you're in the market for an Apple laptop, you can save yourself about $100, and wait till within a week of Snow Leopard's release. That way, you'll get a coupon to get it for free, or get it in the box itself. I welcome your thoughts!

A Day in the Life of a Great Harvest Bread Franchisee

By Candice Clem

There is pretty much one thing that sums up what Great Harvest Bread is about, and that one thing is great bread. Granted, that may be expected of any bakery franchise, but what Great Harvest Bread has is no ordinary appreciation of bread; Great Harvest Bread franchisees really love whole-grain bread, they adore it, and that passion spills over into the way they do everything else: with a hearty helping of generosity, a splash of compassion, and a massive dose of levity, three things that can't be anything but genuine.

Franchisors, franchisees, and employees all share one thing in common: the core Great Harvest Bread values: having fun, baking phenomenal bread, working fast to help customers, creating strong and exciting bakeries, and giving generously to others.

Freedom Franchises

It's this constant exuding of positive energy that defines the daily activities of a Great Harvest Bread franchisee, even though the actual practices of each franchise business vary. Of course every franchisee wakes up, heads to the bakery, and proceeds to bake fresh loaves of whole-grain bread for the day's sales, but while one franchisee may also bake a few dozen batches of cookies, another may be firing up the espresso machine or cooking a huge pot of soup.

Some franchised business opportunities are just cookie-cutter imprints of the same business model over and over again, with the same paint, same design, same products, and same routine, but Great Harvest Bread doesn't feel that that is any way to run a business, so they have instead developed what they call the freedom franchise system. The same name, recipes, and mission are passed down to every franchise as a general blueprint, but franchisees are given the freedom to expand on that basic schematic as they desire. In their own words, the goal of freedom franchising is to "create mom and pop whole-grain bakeries where mom and pop know what the heck they're doing." And from the very beginning, Great Harvest Bread moms and pops are given a huge advantage over the competition.

How It All Began

The very first Great Harvest Bread was started in 1976, in Great Falls, Montana. It had been a few years in the making, spawned by the merging of Pete and Laura Wakeman's love of good bread and their discovery of Montana's vast wheat country. They had previously sold bread from a small, roadside stand, but when they discovered the beautiful wheat fields of Montana, they began to think a little bigger.

In 1978, the second location opened in Kallispell, Montana, then another in Spokane, Washington. It wasn't long before the bakery chain, with its natural excitement, was growing faster and stronger than anyone could keep up with. It was at that point that the Wakemans decided to change hats. In 1983, Pete became CEO, opening and running the new franchise office out of Dillon, Montana and selling the original store to Pete Rysted, who still owns and operates it to this day.

Life As A Great Harvest Franchisee

From the beginning of a professional relationship with Great Harvest Bread, franchisees taking advantage of the franchise opportunity are considered a high-priority investment. Unlike many other businesses that offer new franchisees only one meager week of basic training, Great Harvest Bread requires a new franchisee be prepared for three weeks of training that take them on a road trip across the country. Seeing firsthand how a wide variety of Great Harvest Bread bakeries operate and learning about the business from expert staff at the franchising headquarters. After this intensive training, franchisees are then considered ready to move ahead with a businesses of their own.

After the new franchise owner is given enough practical training to match his passion for bread and business, the franchisor begins to help establish a new location. Finding a location, analyzing the local demographics, negotiating the lease, finding and purchasing equipment, and establishing a unique and appropriate layout for the new store are all included in the franchisor's involvement. For the Great Harvest Bread people, backing their new franchisee, the ultimate goal of all the preparatory work is to ensure that the grand opening is one of the greatest days of his life, and one that sets the pace for rest of his days as a food franchise owner.

But the help doesn't stop at the grand opening. After things are under way, budding franchises are visited right away, at the six-month mark, and again after 12 months have passed. The hope is not simply to start a good bakery, but keep it going.

What Franchisees Have To Say

Hearing the hype, though, may not be enough to sway more skeptical entrepreneurs to believe in the quality of Great Harvest Bread. What does have the power to convince them, however, are the words of franchisees who work on the frontlines.

Pete Rysted, owner and operator of the original Great Harvest Bread location, never expected to run a bakery, and never would have, had it not been for sorry economic conditions that cost him his previous job at about the same time that the bakery went up for sale. He says, "It was like being thrown into the deep end of the pool," but "owning this bakery has really opened up the world to me. It's changed my life in ways I would never have thought possible."

Some franchisees appreciate not only the practical side of this business opportunity, but also its deeply ingrained ideology. Sally Weisman and Tom Amundson of Minneapolis remark, "We've worked hard to create a business that gives back to the community... What has surprised us most is how rewarding it's been to grow and partner with our employees. We have been able to share a work environment that is fun, allows us to do our own thing, and provides a balanced work life. We feel lucky to have discovered and passed along a business philosophy that allows us to nurture families, while prospering at the same time."

Franchisor and franchisee agree: Great Harvest Bread is a winner of a company, with a strong past and a bright future.

So how exactly do you shop for a toner refill kit? If you intend to use a third party refill toner such as the Brother TN-360 toner refill kit, we are providing in the proceeding paragraphs a few tips that would help you close in on that purchase.

Buy from a manufacturer, not just a vendor. Don't purchase your refill kit from a mere vendor. It most cases, they have limited knowledge about the product and are bound to re-echo only the specifications provided on the package. Meanwhile, a manufacturer would have a hand from the product's engineering to its processing and then packaging; so that they would be able to give you an accurate overview on how to use the product efficiently and would be all throughout conscious about giving you a quality refill toner that is compatible with your toner cartridge.

Get in touch with the manufacturer. Avoid placing an order with online stores that you can't contact for any inquiries, before and after the purchase. A legitimate manufacturer would have in operation a reliable customer service hotline that can be accessed for after sales inquiry or troubleshooting concern. A fly by night vendor wouldn't even extend to you the benefit of a returning a purchase in case toner quality falters and might even end up unreachable after the item has been delivered to you. A repeat purchase is typical after the first refill so as much as possible, go for a seller that you can get in touch with and would be willing to foster a long term relationship with you.

Be Gram-Weight Conscious. Inquire about the weight of the bottled toner powder supplied with the kit. You should be getting as much gram load from a brother toner refill kit as the OEM toner and perhaps a little extra. Remember that gram weight determines the yield expected from a toner product. A Brother TN-360 toner cartridge has a specified yield of up to 6700 pages at 5% page coverage. You should be getting as much pages of output from the Brother toner refill kit given the same loading.

Confirm the contents of the kit. Prior to the purchase, make inquiries about what you'll get out of the box. Typical items supplied with the kit include a bottle of fresh toner powder, a funnel cap, lint-free cloth, a pair of latex-free gloves and an instructional material. Likewise ascertain if you will be required to purchase separately a refilling tool or a reset gear (if you intend to refill a starter cartridge).

For best print quality results, get your toner refill kit from a manufacturer with over 10 years of solid experience in the toner cartridge remanufacturing industry. This way, you can be assured of quality toner refill products that are retailed at affordable prices only.

TRENDnet TEW-633GR Wireless Router Review

By Marty Rubenski

I had to part with my old Linksys router. A well deserved rest for all the rigorous hours rendered and labored. I must say it is not the best router, but it served its purpose well. So after canvassing and researching, I'm left with D-Link, Belkin and Trendnet. These brands boast of their own special features and advantages. Price is not really a major issue. I just want to buy something that will be a good investment and that will last for at least a year.

Trendnet is not a popular brand so I was really doubtful if it will be worth it. I was really attracted by its sleek look. Shiny black appearance that will naturally blend with any of your house appliance or room motif. I read enough reviews that will help me avoid any installation problems. I made sure that I am well informed of the router's known or popular issues. I just typed in my browser's address bar. That's where I also accessed the configuration. If you are the obsessive compulsive type, you will find yourself constantly wiping the fingerprints you left on this router. It is similar to the jet black DS Lite. Now, it's very noticeable that the lights are not as bright as the other routers. It has the right brightness or glare. Green light means it's not a gigabyte connection. If it's orange it's in gigabyte connection.

This router is phenomenal especially when you are into intensive streaming of high definition video and gaming applications. Its advanced features are commendable such as the quality of service that automatically detects and prioritizes different types of network traffic. I also like the hardware switch for the easy turning On and Off of the wireless feature. The button on the outside helps in the quick and hassle free security setup through the wireless
protected setup.

Compared to my old loyal router, Trendnet has given me a wider range. It has given me solid transfer rates in every room in my house- a two storey house with four rooms. This router has everything mounted to a single board. It can also be used vertically without losing good reception. This also minimizes overheating that can damage the product. For its price, there's nothing I want more than a detachable antenna and a USB port. So far, so good. Recommended.
