By Andrew Jeremy In the world of bar code terminals and data collection it is important to recognize that you may encounter a time where you need to reboot your bar code terminals. Most people don't know what the difference is between a cold boot and a warm boot; and how each affects their data collection equipment. This article is designed to eliminate some of that confusion and hopefully provide you with the necessary information on how to correctly recover your PDT6846 if it encounters an error from which it cannot recover. A Command Boot on a PDT6846 is used to enter the bar code terminal into its command mode. The command mode is used mainly for testing and downloading programs onto the terminal. Much like going to the command prompt on your computer (run/cmd), various DOS commands can be entered and executed on the PDT6846. A Cold Boot sometimes referred to as a cold start) is the start-up of the terminal from a powered down or off state. A cold boot resets RAM and reboots the program entered onto the NVM. Because a cold boot resets RAM it is important to recognize that any applicatons or data that has not been written to non-volatile memory will be lost. A Warm Boot (sometimes referred to as a warm start) is the resetting of the PDT6846 once it has been powered on and has encountered an error that cannot be recovered. A warm boot will reset the PDT6846 but will retain any data that has been stored in the RAM.

By Sandy Cosser People spend most of their working hours on computers, then go home to their pcs and spend more time mucking around on them. Laptops have become more affordable to the average Joe. It's not unusual to see people in coffee shops, sipping a latte' and typing furiously away. As our lives become more hectic, we constantly seek convenience, which, ironically, tends to increase the pace. With the birth of wireless networks we finally have the means to work everywhere, and no one has an excuse for being out of the loop. Good news for workaholics; bad news for all those who work for them. Wireless networks, or WiFi, function in much the same way as two-way radios. A wireless adapter converts data into radio signals, which are transmitted via an antenna to a wireless router. The router decodes the signal and uses a wired Ethernet connection to send the data to the Internet. The process is simply reversed when data is sent back to the computer. Having wireless adapters on your pcs and laptops is all good and well, but they're useless without WiFi hotspots. When you're in a hotspot your computer just needs to be switched on with the wireless connection enabled, for it to locate a network, which you can then connect to. Some cities are working to create hotspots that span the entire municipality, so that residents can have easy, reliable and inexpensive Internet access wherever they go. Hotspots are completely inconspicuous; the only way you'll know that you're in one is if you spot the signs advertising their presence. Hybrid wireless networks offer the best of both worlds. Hybrid networks make it possible to connect your pc to a wired network and establish a second, wireless connection to your laptop. The process is a little more complicated than establishing a purely wireless network, especially if you use an old operating system such as Windows 95 or 98. But the potential benefits far outweigh the potential problems. A step further along the road of convenience is the Apple iPhone. Instead of lugging a laptop around with you, all you need to stay connected is your phone. Apple's iPhone enables you to keep up to date with news from Digg and follow your favourite blogs. You can browse through an assortment of web apps and can store one on each of your nine home screen pages. The iPhone even has capacity to show movies and TV programmes. If you don't have the time to read, simply download an audio book and work your way through the most current best sellers. Rumours of a Gphone, Google's answer to the iPhone, have been around for over a year. The Gphone will allegedly allow users access to Google search maps, gmail, and Blogger, and that's just the beginning. Concrete information about the Google Phone is virtually impossible to come by, and Google remains curiously tight-lipped about the whole matter. This suits gossip mongers just fine as they continue to speculate about the phone's release, competition between Google and Apple, and the myriad of features that the Gphone is bound to have. Wireless networks are not the way of the future; they are firmly established in the here and now. Science fiction writers of long ago dreamt of a future where technological devices communicated with each other and effortlessly exchanged information. We live in an age where that dream is a reality. Bluetooth, wireless networks and computer/phone hybrids such as the iPhone have made our lives significantly easier and that, in the words of Ron Weasely, is "wicked". It seems that Proporta's products keep getting smaller. I just received an amazing little charger that is about a third smaller than the last one I reviewed from Proporta. But then it only has about half the storage capacity. Proporta is now offering a Mobile Device Charger-Micro that will charge from any USB port. It will store up to 1700 mAh, which is enough power to gas up almost any portable device such as an MP3 player, camera, phone, GPS receivers and more. It does it amazingly quickly too. It comes with an assortment of eight different adapter tips to fit the most commonly used formats. I have to insert one of my pet peeves here, which is the non-standardization of connectors. Why not just make a mini-USB connection standard so you can use the same cables for all devices? Anyway, if you don't find the connector you need for your device, ask Proporta, they may be able to supply the one you need. You get one free one with your order to fit your particular device. The Proporta USB Mobile Device charger Micro is not compatible with the Microsoft Zune, Asus Eee PC, Apple iPhone or Nokia N95 8GB. If you are looking for a charging solution for your Nokia N95 8GB or iPhone, please see our Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger (USB Rechargeable Battery), which is compatible. At first I lamented that the kit did not come with a car charger or an AC charger. But, sifting through my mobile kit paraphernalia I found a car charge that you can plug a USB cable into. I also found an AC charger that you can plug a USB cable into as well. So, I am pretty much set up to charge this little puppy about just about anywhere. It's very simple to operate. It comes about 75% charged right out of the box so that you can start using it immediately. To charge it, just plug the USB cable into the in port and the other end into your computer. A series of blue lights flash to indicate charging and stay blue when fully charged. As the power in the unit decreases the blue lights diminish to indicate the power level. To begin charging another unit with the mini-charger, select the appropriate adapter, connect the cable and push the power switch. As the power in the unit decreases the blue lights diminish to indicate the power level remaining. In addition to the array of tips, it comes with a handy retractable cable, a USB cable with standard and mini tips and a nice nylon drawstring carrying bag. You really should not leave home without one of these mini life-savers. You never know when you are going to run out of juice at a meeting, on a plane, or when your car is broken down. You'l l be glad you have this emergency backup supply to get you going again and again. Actually, it is supposed recharge the average device two and a half times. To make this vital accessory part of your travel kit, go to http://www.proporta.com/search.php?q=mobile+survival+kit+micro. It will set you back $44.95 plus $4.95 shipping. I deem this crisis-averter a must-have appurtenance and a prudent investment. I notice from the Website that you can add a car charger and AC charger as I mentioned above if you do not already have them. Unfortunately, the battery does not have enough hunk to recharge laptaps. For that, you will need Proporta's portable laptop battery. It's your worst nightmare, your phone has fallen from your pocket into a tub of water. You look on in horror and ask yourself if there's any way on earth you can fix a wet cell phone... There are things you can do, but it all comes down to quick action. The plastic covers on most modern phones are fairly tight (indeed the phones are built to withstand showers) but over time water will enter the phone... So the quicker you get it out of the water the better. Unfortunately, the one section of the phone which isn't watertight is the battery compartment. After all it's intended to give you easy access to the battery and your SIM card. As a result water will enter the battery compartment and it will short-out the battery. This is why you need to get the battery out as quickly as possible. Indeed, many circuits inside the phone will quite easily survive immersion in water as long as they are not attached to a power source. Also water is a very good conductor of heat. So even if you do have a short it may not necessarily damage the phone because of the water. This also means that the best thing you can do is to remove the battery whilst the phone is still under water and then bring the phone and the battery out of the water. If your phone has dropped in the sea (or other salt water) then remove the phone's battery as above and immediately immerse the phone in fresh water or run it under a tap otherwise, as the salt water dries crystals of salt will form and these are sure to short-out your phone as soon as any power is applied. Now remove your SIM card from the phone. If you phone is a GSM one then the chances are that you will have saved some (if not all) your contact details to the SIM card. Indeed, these data may be more valuable to you than the phone itself. SIM cards are solid state components and very resilient in general so the best thing for you to do is to pat it dry then place it somewhere safe to dry. Now turn your attention back to the phone itself. What you need to do is to get the phone as dry as possible as quickly as possible. Use a towel, paper towels, tissue paper etc to blot away as much of the surface water as you can. Now you will need to get the remainder of the phone as dry as possible as quickly as possible. What you can't do is so simply leave the phone to air-dry by itself as prolonged exposure to water will damage a number of the components and if the water itself isn't particularly clean, or you come from a hard water area mineral deposits left as the phone dries will cause even more damage. Remove as many of the phone's covers as you can and open any slots so that air can pass through the phone. Now stand your phone next to a hairdryer. Set this on the lowest setting (or just blow air) and don't set it too close to the phone (too much heat will damage the phone's components just as surely as too much water will). Leave the phone for about 5 hours. Come back to the phone and prop it up on tissue paper so that one of the phones openings (speaker jack, charging port, data port etc) lies directly above the paper. Leave for a few minutes and check to see if any moisture has dripped out. If any moisture can be seen repeat the hair drying step. Continue this process until you see no more moisture. Now comes the brave part. After you have left your phone for at least a day (longer might be better) re-attach the battery to see if it works. If your phone does not work remove the battery but plug the phone into the mains. If it works then you're in luck, but your battery is dead and you need a new one. You should now take the phone to an authorized dealer. They may be able to fix it for you (though they may not). Tell the truth about what has happened to the phone and don't try and conceal the fact that the phone became wet (there are indicator strips inside the phone that change colour if it ever comes in contact with water). Sometimes they may be able to fix your phone, particularly if you have undertaken the steps above. You can find even more tips and 'if all else' help plans at How to Rescue a Wet Mobile / Cell Phone. There are complete disassembly instructions for many brands and makes of mobile phones at Mobile Phone Disassembly Guides. When put up against some of the industry leaders in registry repair, Registry Toolkit scores high marks as a registry repair utility. Although it lacks some interesting user features, the job it does in identifying registry files needing repair is more than adequate. Where it falls down in comparision with several of the industry leaders is in being able to give the user an idea of the severity of the errors it finds. Also, its graphic user interface is a little less user friendly than many of its peers'. What Registry Toolkit has going for it is a powerful search algorithm which finds and isolates files needing repair or elimination. It also contains many of the most popular extra features that users have come to expect from their registry cleaner. These include a Browser Helper Object Manager, a Startup List Manager, an Uninstall Manager, and an Internet Explorer Backup/Restore Manager. It, of course, will back up the registry before making any changes. In scanning our test system, Registry Toolkit found some 79 errors for fixing. It picked up quite a few more items for repair than our resident registry utility, although this was considerably less than what some other utilities found. However the program does not allow the experienced user to view which files are being targeted for repair. A list of these items does show up in the background, but as soon as you click a button they disappear. This can be a little disconcerting if you are a hands on user who likes to verify which files are being indicated. Also, there are no disk optimization capabilities in the extra features; although this is rather a minor point. One area in which this product excells is in its help files, which are stored online. The online user's manual does a good job in explaining what this program is capable of doing and how to take advantage of its features. Another area which commercial users in particular may wish to consider is that licensing this program for more than one machine will be less costly than it will with others of the leading registry cleaners in the industry. A commercial user can purchase unlimited computer licenses for just under $90; this is a generous break as most other cleaners list this price in the hundreds of dollars range. For what it provides and the protection it yields, Registry Toolkit certainly ranks up in the top registry cleaners in the industry. If you are able to overlook the sparce and not very eye-pleasing graphic user interface and trust that its judgment in choosing files for repair is solid, then this is definitely a good value for the money. For another opinion of this registry utility, you can visit Review of Registry Toolkit to read another evaluation of Registry Toolkit. About the Author If you'd like to learn about a few of the best registry repair utilities on the market and how you can perform a free scan on your windows registry to help optimize your machine, you can visit this Registry Repair Tool Reviews site where you will find straightforward, unbiased reviews of many of the top registry repair products which can take care of your needs.
